Trackbed Technology

Scott Wilson is the largest UK provider of
specialised consulting services in Trackbed Technology. Since 1995
we have collaborated with a number of universities, together with
railway network owners and operators, in order to develop, promote
and implement best practice in trackbed design, materials knowledge
and site investigation techniques. These techniques are essential
if trackbed assets (and related assets such as structures and
earthworks) are to be maintained, renewed or upgraded to deliver a
network suitable for the 21st century.
Scott Wilson introduced Total Route Evaluation
as a comprehensive investigation methodology to quantify and
optimise tamping, ballast cleaning and renewals along a route.
Total Route Evaluation is structured to obtain the maximum of
engineering data at an optimum cost, utilising:
- Desk study and environmental risk assessments
- Engineering walkover and ground probing radar
- Automatic ballast sampling and trial pitting
- Logging and materials testing in our laboratory
- Data interpretation and development of outline
specifications
Our integrated operations include detailed
site investigation, advanced laboratory testing, high-level
consultancy and specialised research. Many of our staff have PhDs
and their skills ensure that we can bridge the gap between
innovative ideas and practical considerations. We have particular
skills in:
- Buried services searches and possession planning
- Site investigation works, including unbound materials sampling
and BRAT
- Independent assessment of new products for use in
trackbeds
- Ballast deterioration and settlement prediction
- Specialised knowledge in the use of concrete and asphalt in
trackbeds
For problem sites our knowledge of materials’ behaviour and
analytical design procedures can be used to develop non-standard
solutions. For example, we have utilised falling weight
deflectometers to measure track stiffness and predict critical
velocity over soft ground; and developed site specific solutions
for transition zones.
