Tunnelling
The Scott Wilson Tunnelling team includes
highly qualified and experienced engineers providing an
international service that covers all aspects of tunnelling from
preliminary planning and feasibility through detailed design to
supervision and commissioning of projects. Our services also
include project verification and independent checking, technical
advice to banks and lenders, risk assessments, expert witness and
contractual claims assessment.
The team is experienced in a variety of forms
of procurement including Design and Build, working either for
clients preparing documentation or for contractors preparing tender
and detail designs. Alternatively we have provided engineer’s
design for pricing by contractors and have also been involved in
teams working under partnering/framework arrangements.
We use a number of different software packages to carry out
structural analysis of linings in soft ground and rock, including
both plane frame and finite element analysis to assess
soil/structure interaction and ground movements. Our expertise
includes the design of segmental linings, in-situ and sprayed
concrete linings, temporary supports, jacked pipe and box
structures and a range of trenchless techniques. We have carried
out assessments of tunneling techniques and the impacts on third
party structures including tunnels, foundations and utilities. The
Scott Wilson team has a great deal of experience in the key issue
of geometry and operational space requirements in the determination
of the size and shape of the tunnel.
Our work in railways has included the design of new running and
pedestrian access tunnels and the inspection and repair of existing
brick tunnels. Issues dealt with include ventilation and fire
safety in accordance with UIC requirements and coordination with
E&M and Operational requirements.
The team is familiar with the requirements of
the European Union Directive for highway tunnel design and the
issues of fire life safety, ventilation, and incident detection and
management.
