Assessment & Remediation of Undermining
A relic of our historical heritage is a lingering constraint
imposed by the presence of undermining across swathes of the UK.
Whether this be from the mining of coal, limestone, ironstone, salt
or other minerals, the ongoing degradation and collapse of the old
workings and openings can be a hazard for all forms of development
or land usage.
Hazards that could result include subsidence, “crownholes”,
unstable shafts and open shafts, mine gas and contaminated
groundwater. These can present risks to the public, infrastructure
and construction workers, as well as resulting in construction cost
and time over-runs and also claims and litigation.
Scott Wilson’s experienced geotechnical practitioners routinely
provide expert services to assist clients in establishing and
managing the risk presented by undermining, from historical studies
and reconnaissance-level reviews, through full studies and
implementation of remediation schemes, to monitoring.
Key elements in the successful management of such problems are
expert capabilities in the identification and investigation of the
condition and extent of such features, the establishment of the
potential impacts on the site or proposed development, as well as
the design of appropriate and cost-effective remediation works.
Allied factors that must be considered for a holistic solution
include ecology, environment, cost, contractual arrangements
experience, buildability, health and safety and public impact -
Scott Wilson has all of these skills in-house.
