Climate Change

The publication of the Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change’s (IPCC) fourth Assessment Report in 2007 has
helped focus the public’s attention on global warming. The
IPCC provides an authoritative assessment of the science and
represents a broad consensus throughout the global scientific
community. Scott Wilson is responding to the challenge of the
fourth Assessment Report in a number of ways. Firstly, internally
we have begun benchmarking our own corporate carbon footprint.
Secondly, we have expanded our service offerings to include advice
on both climate change mitigation and adaptation advice.
Scott Wilson's advice on mitigation includes
how greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced, offset, traded or
controlled. In terms of adaptation we advise on how current and
future practices and infrastructure can accommodate changing
weather patterns. Our adaptation advice draws on our existing
specialist knowledge on infrastructure, environmental
assessment/management, and natural resource management. To respond
to the mitigation challenges we are building a specialist carbon
management team within Scott Wilson.
The combination of the breadth of services we
cover and our interdisciplinary approach allows us to understand
and begin to control the complexity and uncertainty associated with
climate change. We are able to bring together engineering, waste,
energy, forestry, management, economics, environmental, social and
health assessment disciplines to help design, prepare and implement
projects for the Kyoto Mechanisms (the Clean Development Mechanism
and Joint Implementation). Our specialist knowledge of transport,
property, economics and natural resources, coupled with our policy
research and analysis skills, make us able to advise on carbon
trading. In terms of adaptation we have a long track record in
natural resource management, community regeneration in the UK and
internationally and engineering design, which enables us to provide
robust and technically excellent advice on adapting to climate
change.
