Project Introduction

The Highways Agency awarded this Design and Build (D & B) scheme to Alfred McAlpine who appointed Scott Wilson as their Designer in March 2004. Completion was awarded on 4th June 2007. The scheme construction cost was £29m.

Project Background

The project consisted of grade separating an existing signal controlled junction, together with re-alignment of the A63 through the junction. The current junction was the only signal controlled junction on the M62/A63 Corridor between Liverpool and Hull. The original junction had a poor safety record and was a severe bottleneck.

The scheme consisted of a ‘dumbbell’ type junction of 2 roundabouts connected by a single overbridge (Woodside overbridge) crossing the A63. New link roads have been constructed to link the existing road network to the A63 and to open up the area to the south of the A63 for development

Enhanced pedestrian and cyclist facilities have been provided throughout the scheme. These included a new cycle/footbridge built at the location of the original Gibson Lane junction and a cyclist/pedestrian underpass under one of the link roads that incorporates 14 tiled murals designed by local schoolchildren.
Project Scope

Scott Wilson were Contractor’s Designer on this Highways Agency Design & Build scheme for both Tender and Detailed Design, and all disciplines were provided from within Scott Wilson’s own resources. We also provided a site based team for the supervision of construction.

Value Adding Project Achievements

Scott Wilson were key in Early Identification and resolution of some fundamental problems that put the scheme in serious jeopardy (ie. there was insufficient land in the CPO to accommodate the scheme). Also, Scott Wilson provided specialists in all disciplines to provide for all of the Client’s needs (especially environmental including significant archaeological input and site base environmental Clerk of Works, as well as the normal technical disciplines that included highways, bridges and geotechnical).
