West Coast Route Modernisation UK
Project Introduction
Date: 1998 to date
Client Name: Network Rail
Client Type: Infrastructure Owner
Project Background
The modernisation of this 401-mile route
between London and Glasgow is the largest rail project in the UK,
at a cost of approximately £8billion. This route development
programme delivered by Network Rail is the largest engineering
project of its type in Europe, with some 1,255km of track being
renewed in addition to the upgrade.
West Coast Route Modernisation is a
particularly challenging project as the planning and design work of
this major project had to be conducted around the operational
constraints of the main railway route in the UK.
Project Scope
Scott Wilson has been involved in this major
project since July 1998, acting as the Multi Functional Consultant,
developing outline proposals for major capacity scheme enhancements
in Scotland, Rugby, Trent Valley and Nuneaton.
Scott Wilson undertook the role of Lead
Designer for the West Coast Scotland upgrade and enhancements
work. This work ran from the Scotland/England border to
Glasgow Central and Edinburgh via Carstairs. The principal
works focused on upgrading the existing line to accommodate
enhanced speeds. This involved alterations to track,
signalling, bridges and earthworks. These were a combination
of new and upgrade works, including some major works such as the
renewal of the 89m multi-span structure, Harthorpe Viaduct.
Nuneaton has been built and Scott Wilson has
recently been awarded the completion of high priority outline
design of multi disciplinary remodelling of Rugby station
area. Trent Valley Four Tracking has also been a major award
for Scott Wilson, involving 12 miles of new railway, 35 culverts
and 37 structures. This scheme will increase the capacity of
the line between Tamworth station and Armitage junction.
Scott Wilson is acting as the multi functional
consultant and designer for the scheme, providing the following
services: Engineering design development and coordination,
topographic/track surveys, civil and structural, electrical and
mechanical services, geotechnical services, earthworks and
earth retaining structure design, permanent way design, signalling
and telecommunications design, environmental surveys and drainage
design
Value Adding Project Achievements
Scott Wilson is proud to have been involved with
this major route development scheme for nearly a decade. West
Coast Route Modernisation is the largest project that Scott Wilson
has ever undertaken and continues to be a huge achievement as some
of our designs have already been completed on site for example in
Scotland and Nuneaton. We are currently over seeing the
construction of our designs for Trent Valley Four Tracking and
Rugby which are now being built. Scott Wilson is looking
forward to playing a continuing role on this project as it reaches
its conclusion.
