Airdrie to Bathgate Rail Link Project
Project Introduction
Client: Network Rail
Client Type: Infrastructure Owner
Date: August 2006 – to date
Project background
During 2002-2003, the Scottish Executive examined options for
public transport and road improvements for communities served by
the A8 and the A80. The Central Scotland Transport Corridor Study
(CSTCS) recommendations identified the reinstatement of the rail
link between Airdrie and Bathgate as a key transport development
for Scotland, following 50 years of closure.
On the 30th May 2006, the Airdrie-Bathgate Railway and Linked
Improvements Bill was introduced to the Scottish Parliament and
subsequently received unanimous cross-party support. In May
2007, the Bill was granted Royal Assent, providing Network Rail
with the legal powers to deliver the vital new rail link between
Glasgow and Edinburgh. The Advanced Works for the project
began in June 2007 and include double-tracking of the
Bathgate-Edinburgh line and the upgrade of both Livingston North
station and Uphall Station.
Project Scope
Outline design for a multi-disciplinary
railway project to rebuild and reopen the 22km railway between
Drumgelloch and Bathgate and upgrade 26km of existing railway

Value Adding Project Achievements
Scott Wilson has delivered in excess of 200
Form A design submissions for a complex multi-disciplinary railway
infrastructure project within a demanding 10 month programme. We
added value by bringing our corporate strength to the project,
which at its peak utilised over 150 Scott Wilson staff across 12 UK
office locations.
