Relocation Study and Master Plan for Marrakech Airport

Relocation StudyProject Introduction

Client:Office National des Aeroports
Value:$500 million
Date:2002-ongoing
Scope:Airport Master Plan

Project Background

Scott Wilson was appointed in December 2002 to carry out a three-phase project to study the feasibility of transferring the existing airport to a new airport site in order to serve Marrakech. The existing airport, which handles predominantly tourist traffic, is situated within three kilometres of the center of the historic city and experiences capacity restrictions due to its proximity to the city and consequent noise abatement procedures.

Project Scope

The first stage involved consultations with the airport authority, data collection and reviewing facilities through inspections and evaluations and preparation of traffic forecasts. The analysis at this stage determined the capacity and constraints on the existing airport and provided a decision framework for possible relocation. The second stage involved site selection for possible new sites using GIS techniques against a number of selection criteria, including access, environment, land use and topography. Ground and aerial inspections of over 10 sites were undertaken. The third phase provides a new master plan and a coherent strategy for the development of the airport to 2025 and beyond. It encompasses all main facilities including runways and taxiway system, aprons, terminals, cargo facilities and transportation links.

Value Adding Project Achievements

This project is a good example of Scott Wilson’s success in providing a ‘one-stop shop’ service across a broad range of disciplines.
