Water Supply for Mine Development, Jamaica

Introduction of the Project
Jamalco, a mining company co-owned by Alcoa
and the Jamaican Government, is upgrading its mining facilities at
Mt. Oliphant and Greenvale in Jamaica. Scott Wilson was
appointed by design and construct partner Kier Construction
(Caribbean and Industrial Division) to provide Project Management,
Electrical, Mechanical, Process, Civil and Hydraulic design
services for the water elements of this massive project.
Project Background
The project entails extraction of groundwater
from two boreholes, the water then being pumped to the mountain top
mining facilities. The site topography introduced significant
difficulties into the design process which had to be overcome by
innovations with a multidisciplinary approach. Multiple
high-pressure booster pumping stations are required to transfer the
requisite flows.
Project Scope
The scope of services for water treatment and
collection/distribution includes:
- Raw borehole water collection.
- Balancing lagoons.
- Pipeline designs and all related
infrastructure including material selection and transient
analysis.
- Multiple booster pumping stations and
associated controls.
- ICA and MCC Design.
- LV Distribution.
- Potable water treatment plant.
- Design of 25m high water tower.
- Water treatment for site workforce including
water softening, chlorine removal, UV disinfection.
- Control and Power Interfaces with a 3km
overhead conveyor system.
Value Adding Project
Achievements
As well as these elements, Scott Wilson also
designed the wastewater and drainage systems and was appointed to
supervise the electrical and mechanical installation and
commissioning works.
