Seychelles Waste Master Plan
Project Introduction
In order to safely manage waste in a
sustainable manner The Government of the Seychelles required a
comprehensive strategy to be developed that met the limited
available resources and addressed the inherent difficulties of
environmental protection on a small, remote island community.
Project Background
Previous waste management practices and
operations had left the local people with a series of ad hoc
arrangements and a range of facilities, some under-utilised or
ineffective. There was a pressing need to put a plan in place that
delivered a more efficient waste management service.
Project Scope
In 2002 Scott Wilson was commissioned to
update the national Solid Waste Master Plan, including:
- Prediction of solid waste arisings over the period.
- Develop alternative waste management scenarios.
- Identify alternative methods for waste collection and treatment
and appraise their financial, environmental and technical
implications.
- Identify the need for new legislation, institutional and
contractual strengthening.
- Identify and recommend an approach to raise public awareness of
the problems and the strategy for their solution.
- Develop and appraise a set of strategic options.
- Identify a preferred option.
Value Adding Project
Achievements
A comprehensive plan was devised that
identified a clear series of actions to be taken that would deliver
sustainable waste management for the next generation.
