Project Introduction

Contract Administrator, Conservation Management Plan
Date: 2000 - 2006
Client: Bexley Town Council
Client Type: Local Authority

Project Background

Extensive restoration and improvement of Danson Park, an early nineteenth century park originally designed by Nathaniel Richmond (assistant to Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown). This focussed on restoration of the gardens and setting of the recently restored Grade 1 listed Danson House, as well as improving the facilities for the park users into the twenty-first century.

Project Scope

Undertaken to make a successful application to the Heritage Lottery Fund Public Park Initiative. Key works include renovation of the gardens around the House including period style planting, footpaths, railing and the re-creation of a brick haha wall. The project also included construction of a new play area including wet play facility and the conversion of an existing building to provide a refreshment kiosk and public toilets. Other works include path improvements, planting, parking provision and drainage works.

Value Adding Project Achievements

Restoration of the historic fabric and modern day improvements to the park have provided the client with a flagship park of immense popularity in the local community. The proposals have enhanced the long-term future of the park and increased revenue opportunities (such as the kiosk, fairs, weddings at the house etc). Interpretation of the heritage landscape has enabled the historic value of the park to be better interpreted by visitors whilst incorporating these features into a contemporary park exceeding modern day standards.
