Smugglers Way Materials Recycling Facility
Introduction of the
Project
Cory Environmental Ltd proposed to build and
operate a new riverside Materials Recycling Facility in Wandsworth,
London. This will form part of Cory’s contract with the Western
Riverside Waste Authority (comprised of four London Boroughs) to
recycle and dispose of waste on their behalf for 30 years.
Project background
A MRF is a facility which receives, sorts and
bales mixed recyclable materials collected from households in the
local community. Materials include newspaper, plastic bottles, cans
etc. From the MRF, sorted materials are sent onwards to be recycled
in to new products and materials. The Government’s objective is to
reduce the amount of waste disposed of to landfill, principally by
increasing recycling, composting, and energy recovery. This is best
illustrated by the Waste Hierarchy. The Government has also set
stringent and challenging targets relating to the proportion of
waste that has to be recycled. The Smugglers Way MRF will be a
principal vehicle through which the Western Riverside Waste
Authority can work towards reaching their recycling targets.
