New England Quarter, Brighton
Project Introduction
Client: Crest Nicholson and BioRegional Quintain
Value: £18m
Completion: 2007
Project Background
The scheme includes townhouses and apartments, some of which is
affordable housing, plus commercial and retail space. The project
is a joint venture between Crest Nicholson South East and
Bioregional properties, and the project team includes Feilden,
Clegg & Bradley and Fulcrum Engineering, who were involved with
the BedZed development.
Minimising adverse impact on the environment is a guiding
principle behind the design strategy of the New England Quarter.
Measures will be taken to reduce the amount of waste produced
during construction. The potential to re-use or recycle materials
will be explored. The use of local companies during the
construction works is being encouraged, and a green procurement
procedure will be adopted throughout the construction phase. A key
requirement for the site is that the buildings should be
constructed from materials which minimise the use of non-renewable
resources, have the potential to be recycled and are not damaging
to the environment.
Reducing car use on the site through the promotion of
alternative forms of transport is a key element of the transport
policy, and cycle use will be promoted through the provision of
cycle routes, cycle parking and car-free properties.
