Hamilton Town Square
Project Introduction
Scott Wilson was awarded first place in a major international
design competition for a new £3m Town Square in Hamilton, Scotland.
The square was part of a £300m capital investment of the Palace
Grounds including retail, leisure, recreation and housing
developments.
Project Background
The Client’s goal was to create a major events area and public
place linking the old town with the new developments. The design
had to allow a degree of flexibility as the Square was implemented
before the buildings around it.
Major canopy structures, which were central to the scheme, had
not received secured funding prior to the start of work on site.
However, as work had to be programmed to complete the lower square
for the opening of the new ASDA store, supplementary temporary
lighting and foundation bases were redesigned in advance of the
canopy, which was eventually installed at the end of the contract
with minimum disturbance to completed work.
Project Scope
Throughout the project there was close liaison with the Client
to ensure their vision was being realised. Servicing provision for
future buildings around the square had to be incorporated within
the masterplan to facilitate future development and to ensure that
existing peripheral services would be adequate.
Artworks were also integral to the design concept. Liaison with
the artists and commissioning of the works were undertaken through
the contract.
