Royal Victoria Hospital Redevelopment
Project Indroduction
The new £42m building at the Royal Victoria Hospital represents
a rare combination of architectural excellence within a highly
specialised and technically demanding environment.
Project Background
The £42m redevelopment involved the provision of new hospital
departments and services which included a new seven storey
state-of-the-art clinical building in the heart of the existing
complex site.
Project Scope
The required the new block includes outpatient departments, an
imaging department, “Ultra-Clean” operating theatres, a pharmacy
and 390 beds for inpatient care. Externally, the building is
finished with metallic silver aluminum panels, providing a striking
contrast to the red-bricked Victorian Buildings which it replaces.
Inside the building, the environment is bright and airy with a
glazed main rotunda providing a spectacular entrance. A fully
glazed corridor provides excellent views of the landscaped
courtyards and roof gardens. Individually commissioned pieces
of artwork are scattered throughout the building, reflecting the
history and culture of the hospital.
Value Adding Project Achievements
This scheme reinforces the Royal Victoria Hospital’s
worldwide reputation for healthcare excellence and,
significantly, it has been reported as being the first major
healthcare project in the UK to be completed within budget and
programme. The project gained a Commendation in the RSUA Design
Awards and a Commendation from the Irish Landscape Institute Awards
2002.
