Royal Victoria Hospital Critical Care Centre

Project Introduction
Scott Wilson has been commissioned to design a New Critical Care
Centre with a value of £103m at the Royal Victoria Hospital. This
is part of the ongoing redevelopment of the complex site for the
Royal Group of Hospitals Trust
Project Background
The Centre will include a new Accident and Emergency Department,
Operating Theatre suites, 40 bed Regional Intensive Care Unit with
specialised simultaneous source protection rooms, Gynaecological
theatres, Gynaecological wards, medical records, a new Education
Centre and a Plant.
This latest phase of the redevelopment is situated adjacent to
the existing seven-storey ‘A-block’ building and the old A & E
entrance which is also seven storeys. This difficult site is
extremely restrictive and contains a large amount of existing
services.
Project Scope
The 12-storey main building includes an underground level
Service Duct and Level 1 Plant Area. At high level, there are 2
plant room floors and also a roof Helipad some 50m above ground
level. The helipad is a key element of the design to
accommodate the helicopter emergency services who will fly critical
patients in and out of the site.
The building work will include the extension of the existing
Glazed Street – an elevated 2 storey link to the adjacent A-Block
and a single storey underground service duct.
The main structure comprises an in-situ reinforced concrete
frame supported on piled foundations.
Value Adding Project Achievements
The works will be phased to allow the construction of a new
temporary ambulance roundabout and access road opposite the
existing EENT building prior to the ambulance facilities being
constructed adjacent to the Imaging Centre. This work will be
achieved while adjacent hospital facilities remain operational at
all times throughout the construction of the new A&E
building.
Every piece of furniture is bespoke, including light fittings,
tiles and the artwork to make it not only a clean but also
welcoming environment.
