University of Birmingham Medical School Wolfson Centre for
Medical Education

Project Introduction
Works value £8 million. Fee value £120k. Client: Architects
Design Partnership. Client type: Consultant.
Project Background
The original 1938 Medical School required a major extension to
provide a new 450 seat lecture theatre and student catering and
social facilities to meet modern day demands. The main challenge
for Scott Wilson as structural engineers was to support the tiered
lecture theatre over the new social facilities, within the confines
of the curved soffit.
Project Scope
Scott Wilson were appointed as structural and civil engineers
under a Framework Agreement with the University of Birmingham
through partner Architects, Architects Design Partnership,
continuing a long working relationship with ADP at the University
of Birmingham extending back to the mid 1990's.
Value Adding Project Achievements
Scott Wilson's engineers devised an elegant system for
supporting the large raking lecture theatre, utilising a series of
interconnecting steel lattice trusses which supported the stepped
concrete flooring and walls of the lecture theatre and the curved
timber soffit which is exposed to view below. In addition the
structural solution to support the full height structural glass
facade required careful attention to detail.
