Ruislip School, London Borough of Hillingdon
Project Introduction
2006 - Local Government
Project Background
This project involves a new high school development for
Hillingdon Borough Council.
Project Scope
The client was keen on low energy solutions and aimed to achieve
a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rating. Scott Wilson was responsible for
Building Services design.
Value Adding Project Achievements
A fundamental element in the design was compliance with the
relevant Building Bulletin design guides, such as BB 83, 87, 93, 95
and the Department for Education and Skills guidelines. In addition
to ensuring that the low energy Building Services design solutions
were compliant with the relevant standards, Scott Wilson has worked
to optimise the design through in-house engineering studies,
thermal analysis and natural daylight calculations.
Innovative ventilation solutions ensured adequate fresh air
throughput in the classrooms is achieved. The thermal
analysis has established that with the external envelope of the
classrooms sealed, the proposed low energy solutions, including the
passive night time pre-cooling of the classrooms structure are
viable. With a sealed envelope, and including normal estimated
internal loads, reasonable internal temperatures conform to the
comfort benchmarks as contained in the BREEAM and BB87. A green
roof was also incorporated in parts of the school, which helped
improve the insulation properties of the associated structure.
